Lost in Translation

If you are English, might I suggest you don’t say to an Australian you’re just popping home “to have a good root around.”

Yes you are talking about locating a lost item.

However the Australian will think you are up to something far, far more personal and will wonder why you are telling everyone.

Similarly, should anyone reading this happen to have been in Canada’s 2000 Olympic team (of course!), when you were walking around Sydney with “Roots” written all over your clothes, we were laughing at you.

Just thought you should know.

  1. Ouch! In fact I was on the 2000 Canadian Olympic team…well, not quite, but I am Canadian and I have been on a team…and I have a Roots t-shirt. I'll never wear it again.
