Red Carpet Kids

A few posts back I wrote about a 14 year old Bright Young Thing.  Her fashion credentials are the exact opposite to mine when I was 14 and wearing Laura Ashley and Levi’s 501s – anything to dress like my friends.  If you’re really keen you can read about her here: http://midthirtieslife.blogspot.com/2010/10/back-in-day.html.

Well I just had another such moment.  Below is a picture of Willow Smith, daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.  You’d be pretty happy with those genes wouldn’t you.  Anyway, she is ten.  TEN!! One year older than nine.  Not yet eleven.   10.

I don’t know what to say.  I’ll start by saying you have to admire confidence like that.  After you’ve admired her confidence, it’s time to wonder what was she thinking.  Then think back to when you were ten.
There is video footage of me at that age.  Want to know what I am doing in it?  I am wearing green terry-toweling shorts and a t-shirt with a koala saying, “C’Mon Aussie”, that’s what.  I am playing with a hot pink sarong with gold palm trees, wrapping it around my head then getting all tangled up and having to be rescued before I suffocate.  That’s what I was doing at ten.
Confidence is good.  But I wonder if she’ll look back in her thirties and wonder “what the hell?” like the rest of us.

Bold shoulder: Willow Smith showcased an edgy outfit as she arrived at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles tonight

PS: Sorry about the formatting.  Formatting is not my friend.

  1. ohhhh where to begin… I'll start with the shoes- they look like hefty trash bags. She's too old to be wearing a jumper. Anyone over the age of 4 is. And what the HELL is that yellow thing?

Her parents are loaded, can't they pay someone to dress her?

  2. I can't get images of drop waist, shapeless Laura Ashley dresses out of my head now… I also still have my 501s. (we are very much of the same era).

Willow Smith is such a pretty girl – she needs an outfit suitable for a young girl though, and not Lady Gaga.

  3. I know, I know. I was trying not to be too harsh as she's only 10. But yes there is nothing good about it. So is a jumpsuit called a “jumper” in the US?

Farmers Wife how about this: when I was 13 or 14, I went to a dance wearing a long drop-waist dress with FARM ANIMALS all over it. Pigs / goats / cows / a rooster… the worst part? I chose it.

“So did you dance with any boys?”
“Well no, on account of my dress being distinctly bovine.”

  4. Anything that gives a 10 year old a camel toe is wrong wrong wrong wrong. Poor willow. Someone needs to take her aside and tell her she looks ridiculous – my mum did it for me and I thank her for it now. Not that I looked much better in the body suit and paisley shirt combo we decided on together 🙂

  5. Very sad on all levels. But I now have a fabulous image of you as a young 'un so thanks for that! Have never heard the term 'camel toe' but it is now my new favourite saying – lets just hope I never have to use it on my own daughter…
(BTW Thanks so much for your vote for me – I dont get to see the names so that'll be just between you and one of the biggest online businesses in the world then;)
